We didn’t start Happy Monk in a boardroom with a pitch deck.
We started it in a rented kitchen — with trusted cooks, a shared vision, and a deep love for food that brings people together.
Varun was already running a momo business across India. Even amidst the hustle, we had our food and travel escapades and there was always room for curiosity. We kept asking ourselves: What more could we do with this format?
That curiosity led us to dimsums — refined, nuanced, and quietly luxurious. The kind you’d expect at white-tablecloth restaurants, plated by chefs flown in from abroad. We worked with trained chefs, tested recipes, and shared everything with family and friends. Meanwhile, I (Deepthi) was still deep in marketing, with a side hustle as Chief Taster.
Friends would call and say, “Can you send over a batch?”
Soon we were taking party orders, stashing packs for freezers, and that meant couriering dimsums across Mumbai.
The response?
“When can we get more?”
That’s when we knew — our craving was becoming our calling.
And so, Happy Monk was born.
